Little Wisdoms

A Collection of Stories for Navigating Life

About Little Wisdoms

If I could only pass down one value to my daughter, it would be Wisdom. Not love, happiness, or resilience. Wisdom is what guides our paths like a shimmering light in a dark forest. It provides clarity to our minds when choosing between two equally good paths, and it turns our daily, seemingly repetitive walk into a meaningful, eternal journey. Wisdom is all things beautiful, hopeful, and heavenly.

But wisdom is hard to find. It is like a rare book or artwork that you find in a secondhand bookstore. Out of joy and trembling, you hand your debit card to the owner, fingers crossed that you have enough in your bank account to cover the amount. You bring the treasure home, and it doesn’t matter that you won’t be able to enjoy a reasonable meal for the rest of the month until your paycheck comes in because the precious artwork is now yours.

I found my Wisdom in the Bible—or rather, Wisdom found me. Growing up as a missionary kid, I witnessed God work in my parents’ lives and those they touched as medical missionaries. However, it was only when I went to college alone in a new country that my family’s God became my personal God. When I cried about my fears, God spoke to me for the first time: “I will raise you as My own child from now on.” He kept that promise, using specific people to speak truth into my life at the right time, leading strangers to give me books that contained answers to my spiritual struggles, and above all, using His Word, the Bible, to teach me all the little wisdoms I needed to navigate life.

This website is a collection of those little wisdoms I gathered over the years from the Bible, sermons, books, travels, and personal reflections. My hope is that these stories will form a beautiful, one-of-a-kind map for my daughter to use when she feels lost in life. Perhaps with this map, she won’t meander as much as I did. Or perhaps she will still wander far and wide. And maybe, just maybe, she will find that Wisdom Himself was searching for her all along.

A word about the Little Wisdoms logo:

The Little Wisdoms logo is inspired by one of my favorite photos of my daughter, lost in a book, “reading” it intently upside down. Similarly, the logo portrays a young girl studying a huge book on her lap. I’ve had many days where I was lost in a book, without any care in the world. And to see my own child reading a book on her own! It doesn’t matter that she was looking at it upside down. Her desire to read is what matters to me. In the same way, I believe God delights in our humble (and rudimentary) attempts to seek Wisdom because our search for true Wisdom will always lead to Him. The Little Wisdoms logo is my reminder to remain a little child at heart—open, curious, humble, and always learning.

P.S. Below is a picture of me with the biggest smile on my face after buying a book from Livraria Bertrand in Portugal, the oldest running bookstore in the world.
